Who Invented The Alarm Clock?

March 19, 2008 by Justin

Alarm ClockI woke up to the sound of my alarm clock this morning and wanted nothing more than to kill the fool that invented this tool from hell.

My entire drive to work consisted of nothing but thinking, why on Earth did this guy/girl have to come up with this idea of a clock that wakes you up in the morning?

Had that never been invented, I would of slowly made my way out of bed this morning at 9:30 and would have felt great. But no, someone had to have the brilliant idea of a clock that interrupts the human sleep cycle.

So who was it?

According to Wikipedia, “The first mechanical alarm clock was invented by Levi Hutchins, of New Hampshire, in the United States, in 1787. This device he made only for himself however, and it only rang at 4 AM, in order to wake him for his job.”

Levi, Levi, Levi, what on Earth were you thinking?

Obviously if you had to come up with an invention to get to work on time, that the job just was not for you. You should of quit the job and found a afternoon shift. Instead, you killed it for all of us. Now everyday we wake up to that awful sound and get out of bed hours before we’re ready too. Pablo Picasso could not have said it better, “Work is a necessity for man. Man invented the alarm clock.”  I sure wish we wouldn’t have…

More importantly, I now wake up angry and startled by the annoying sound of the devil clock. One of these days I am going to have a heart attack when it goes off and it will be because of your invention.

Even Wikipedia says that “Among annoyances caused by alarm clocks is sleep inertia, a feeling of grogginess that results from abrupt awakening.” So that’s why I wake up more tired than when I went to bed. It all has to do with that clock in my room.

I think the best solution is to throw away every alarm clock I own. If I do not wake up early enough to be on time to work, then it just wasn’t meant to be. I am tired of screwing with my sleep cycle to the point where I cannot even sleep anymore. I think I struggle to fall asleep simply because I am afraid the alarm clock is going to go off and scare the crap out of me.

So the next time you see Levi, please sucker punch him for me!

I agree, today was one of those days. Although I find when I wake up at the same time every day no matter what I start to beat the alarm clock in waking. But that is a tough one to sell especially come Saturday and Sunday.

I couldn’t agree more. I swear alarm clocks are a conspiracy of some underground Satanist movement that is run by people who pray to a giant statue of Satan with an alarm clock in his hand.

I usually use my mobile phone to wake me up for work. My dilemma is, if I throw away my phone which in theory will give me super-awesome sleep, people won’t be able to call me or txt me stuff like “man its hot as today”, or “hey whos numba is dis?”.

I guess I’ll keep my phone and wake up every day and go to work instead. I have hopes of profiting off the Internet one day. I’m hoping my blog gains some more traction, I need new ideas that revolve around the “things that suck” niche though before my blog can help me quit a job.

Even I feel the same as you feel when you wake up after hearing the alarm clock in the morning. The best way is to adjust our body cycle by sleeping at the same time in the night and getting up at the same time in the morning. After few weeks, we can get up by ourselves without an alarm clock, as this becomes a habit.
